Summer of Sam, for all its flash and well-crafted fury, is only superficially disturbing. It's a nightmare stroll down memory lane: feel-bad nostalgia.
David Ansen. Like most of Lee's work, this bites off more than it can chew, but the breadth and energy are impressive.
Jonathan Rosenbaum. This is trashy exploitation at its clumsiest. Once more, a Spike Lee movie has been undone by the earnestness of being important.

The picture quality throughout is a little soft while there is noticeable colour banding on gradients like walls and faces. It runs at original speed unlike many 50Hz transfers so motion is a bit jerky making it hard to watch camera pans.
It will not be to everyones taste but I loved this film based on the Son of Sam murders not just directed at the story behind the murderer but the people living in that area, sex, drugs and rock and roll.
Great music and story line. One person found this helpful. Quite possibly Spike Lee's best film. I saw this at the cinema back in the day and was blown away by the raw power of the everyday characters getting by their everyday lives whilst a gun totting, dog hating madman holds NYC in a grip of fear.
Apart from Adrian Brody cringing attempt at being a cockney this is riveting powerful stuff, and a great soundtrack to boot. Brilliantly directed and superbly cast and acted with an outstanding and varied soundtrack, but I was disappointed.
What I saw was a film concerning the sex lives of the main characters and drug, alcohol and incoherent thought.
A Serial killer is on the rampage in the blistering heat of New york in Our characters are trying to guess who it might be and making the suspects fit the crimes.
They fail. There is little time actually spent on the crimes or killer himself. For me it was rather a let-down but it is worth watching once.
I would not want to see it again, but I gave it 3 stars for its many attributes. I bought this for Kalifornia but enjoyed the other films as well.
Kalifornia is such a well known film but it's got loads of stars in it. The other two films are based on true stories.
Great movie, bought many years ago now and sadly lost in the ether of moving and travelling, but an interesting take on the reactions of a deadly threat from different members of various communities, based on real events in New York.
A recommended watch. SOS is a an epic classic for all 55 to 65 year olds. It evokes the punk era and plays out in back drop of intense hot summer like in uk.
