Een groep mensen reist af naar het eiland waar zombieachtige aanvallen plaatsvinden. Het aantal zombies neemt als snel toe en een voor een worden de groepsleden op spectaculaire wijze gedood.

Het hotel blijkt te zijn gebouwd op een van de poorten naar de hel. The Beyond werd berucht vanwege de brute manier waarop mensen aan hun einde komen.
Spinnen eten een gezicht op, lichamen worden in zuur opgelost en elke dode lijkt weer tot leven te komen om de eerste de beste omstander bloedig te doden.
De overlevenden wacht op het einde bovendien een nare verrassing. Het Britse Shaun of the Dead is een van de origineelste humorfilms van de laatste jaren.
In de film beleven de vrienden Shaun en Ed vreemde avonturen tegen de achtergrond van een langzaam toenemende zombieaanval.
Shaun zit op een dood spoor in zijn leven en ook zijn liefdesrelatie lijkt in een impasse te zijn geraakt. Zo druk heeft hij het met het oplossen van zijn problemen dat de zombies die op straat ronddolen hem niet eens opvallen.
De film waarmee de moderne zombiefilm werd geboren werd met een minimaal budget in zwart-wit geschoten. Een groep mensen verschanst zich in een boerderij wanneer om mysterieuze redenen zombies ontstaan die vervolgens iedereen aanvallen.
De sfeer op de boerderij is claustrofobisch en er ontstaan ruzies over de vraag wat de beste overlevingsstrategie is. Een expeditie om medicijnen en brandstof te halen loopt rampzalig af.
De zombies weten ondertussen niet van ophouden. Bovendien wist hij door het gebruik van de zwarte hoofdpersoon Ben op grimmige wijze kritiek te leveren op racisme.
De Amerikaanse samenleving wordt compleet ontwricht door een zombie-epidemie. Twee soldaten raken tijdens het opruimen van zombies bevriend en besluiten met twee vrouwen in een helikopter te ontsnappen.
Uiteindelijk vinden ze in een gigantisch warenhuis een perfect onderkomen om in te overleven. Maar dan moeten ze nog wel alle zombies kwijt zien te raken die uit gewoonte rond de winkels blijven hangen.
Dawn of the Dead is gewelddadig maar heeft ook een unieke sfeer waarbij subtiele maatschappijkritiek niet wordt geschuwd. Bovendien geeft de film de beste tip voor overleving tijdens een zombie-aanval: vlucht naar het dichtstbijzijnde warenhuis.
