While I get a tad annoyed with Godzilla movies that have elements that are clearly supposed to take place outside of continuity and yet claim to be part of the series "Godzilla vs.
Megaguirus" is a prime example , I will give this one a pass. In this excellent movie, Godzilla is possessed by the souls of people killed in war by Imperial Japan, and they want revenge.
The thematic material is effective and thought-provoking. Action and pacing are great, the effects are very nice, and the storyline is one of the best in the franchise, IMHO.
I bought this movie right around when the new Godzilla released in theaters but didn't watch it until a few weeks later.
They were bad guys, but you couldn't help but cheer them on because they just changed up the wrestling landscape storyline wise. Here Godzilla kicks butt and takes names.
I won't go into the storyline as plenty of other reviews cover that. Instead, I'd like to credit how Toho juxtaposes between Kaiju and human character scenes, and shows how helpless the people really are when compared to the Kaiju.
On that note, Toho does a good job with scene pacing, so that you don't get too much or too little of monster Godzilla or humans. Also, I like how Toho made Ghidrah Ghidorah a mythical guardian of Japan although not necessarily a guardian of the Japanese people , as opposed to his usual space alien role.
I think the only other time that I rooted for Ghidorah was the mecha version in the film Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. Finally, I'd like to note that there is actually a fourth monster well, technically sixth I felt kinda bad for him because Mothra had a better chance of beating Godzilla and she is usually one of the weakest monsters.
Overall I highly recommend this movie for new and old Godzilla fans who wanted to see more of Godzilla from the movie. The dvd was shipped and received very swiftly so kudos for amazon for that!
I received and watch the movie yesterday as i had never seen it before. In short i will say this is a very good installment in the Godzilla Franchise.
The atmosphere of the movie is really good, with excellent film score. It is more serious than other Godzilla movies. You know how in these movies there is that one annoying kid that to make it appeal to younger audiences?
Yea no annoying kid in this one. You know how the military always seems a bit comical in their over the top uniforms and how they are either complete jerks, or super nice and patriotic?
Yea you dont get that here. The military seems more real, even their uniforms and equipment seem appropriate to real life.
Overall it is more gritty from the human standpoint. The human side of the plot is well done, and it doesn't leave you with "come on show Godzilla already!
The monsters seem to have gone through somewhat of a remake in both looks and background. For once King Ghidorah is a good guy and is a protector of the land along with Mothra and Barugon.
Both Mothra and Barugon look good, but i didn't quite like Ghidorah's appearance. He seemed to clean and cartoonish in appearance.
It just did not feel right. Now the reason i only gave the movie 4 stars was because of the way they did Godzilla.
The suit they used really irked me, and it was a sore spot for me throughout his appearance. The movie seemed to have a bigger budget than most Godzilla movies it would stand to reason they would do a better job on the main character.
Despite his appearance Godzilla is full on Beast in the movie. Most movies he rampages and damages stuff but always seems to appear like he is just really bored.
Even when he fights other monsters when they are defeated he just moves on looking for something else to do.
Not in this movie! Godzilla's rampage is full of intent, and he even takes notice small groups of people and intentionally attacks them.
His fights with the other monsters are equally as savage, and he doesn't mess around. If you are a fan of Godzilla movies this is a must have!
I wouldn't call it the best Godzilla movie ever, but it certainly was riveting. It's supposed to be compensation for that sorry american piece of trash they fried in Godzilla: Final Wars, I'll bet.
It connects it directly to that other movie, so I wouldn't be surprised if it WAS compensation. At any rate, the only things that bothered me were pretty scarce.
That's like considering Vegeta as gentle as Gohan pre-androids. Secondly, I realize that they make him "young" and "undeveloped," but he's too puny!
Little spoiler, he DOES get bigger, but only for one camera shot where his wings spread outrageously wide over the city. After that shot, though, he goes back to being a similar size to what he had before.
Notably bigger, but not much at all. Lastly, there's a camera shot shortly thereafter where the main girl in the movie, Yuri, is screaming with quite a high intensity.
With her mouth closed. Swinging her arms around very slowly. The acting lifts this movie from a Zero to a 2-Star. King Ghidorah in particular is slighted.
The movie gives him little to do other than flop around around as Godzilla attempts to incinerate him with his "radioactive" breath-ray.
If Toho went into CGI'ing the "Giant Monsters" the studio might have a real blockbuster instead of a comedy action movie that just does not entertain.
