It's too bad, I would have watched a series of movies with these people. Especially Caroline Munro, she's so adorably cute that you just want to gobble her up.

At the same time Hammer were desperately searching for a new spin on their traditional vampire tales, with Sir Christopher of Lee getting continually grumpy and twitchy feet about reprising the role, along came this hopeful franchise starter to take things in a very different direction Sure, the gothic setting remained, but almost everything else was new: firstly, we got an odd if not unenjoyable genre mix of gothic vampire flick, heroic swashbuckler and murder mystery.

Our very wooden lead rolls into town, with his hunchbacked companion who, like the rest of the film is an interesting mix of part Igor, part Van Helsing , picks up Caroline Munro because who wouldn't?

Captain Kronos is pretty much the old-timey swashbuckler version of Blade : They both have a sword, a fancy coat and a badass old sidekick who builds their weapons.

Apparently my vampire knowledge wouldn't kill a flea's codpiece either, because in this movie vampires walk in the day, drain the youth and not blood from their victims and inadvertently resurrect frogs.

Despite the silliness of all of this within the mythos of vampires, I still thoroughly enjoyed this film. The pacing is way too slow, and this was clearly setting up a whole series, but it was beautifully shot with good acting and an interesting story.

The beauty of the scenery and sets mixed with some great characters and cheesiness made this a huge win for me. It really is too bad that "Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter: is such a slog to sit through.

The handsomely designed and shot costume horror from Hammer has some interesting ideas, plot points, and seems to want to transcend the genre, but is simply too slowly paced to be effective.

Captain Kronos, a former military man, is a vampire hunter who roams the countryside with his humpbacked, acacdemic sidekick, Grost.

As portrayed here, there is something James Bondian about the dashing Kronos, supplying the film with a bit of an edge and a sense of humor.

This sly sense of humor, along with some interesting additions to vampire mythos and a twisty climax, is refreshing. Unfortunately, the film crawls plot point to plot point with no real passion, bombast, or energy.

Everything that is interesting about the experience ends up wasted due to the film's inability to fully engage its audience.

Decently paced, somewhat elegant, bloody and sexy. The final film of Hammer's for a while. A real shame it failed at the time cause its a more than solid watch and idea.

For one it handles vampire hunting as almost more of a science.. Or at least more of a curiosity that passed for smarts.

Lastly, Caroline Munro. The whole thing could've been just her and it'd be perfect. This movie is incredibly important and intensely fun.

It consistently subverts your expectations and owns its camp. The lead is very wooden and the beautiful Caroline Munro is not given much to do.

There is some interesting changes to the Vampire lore but the payoff is not worth the wait. Although it picks up a bit in the final act, most of this film felt very aimless with not much going on.

There are good moments here and there, like Kronos and Grost trying various methods to slay a newly turned vampire, or the infrequent appearances of the mysterious hooded vampire which I think must have made an impression on Peter Jackson, because the similarities in certain scenes to his depiction of the Ringwraiths are impressive , but by and large it's a slog.

The mystery element is also very poor, as it tries so hard to make you think it's a specific character that it instead makes you absolutely certain it's not that character, and it tries so hard to….

It seems Hammer can be counted on for great costumes, great atmosphere, and at least a couple of really good shots I'm thinking of the shadow that appears to be from the crucifix that slowly bends its "arms".

Characters and dialog are perhaps not the strongest. Once you know what to expect, these films are a lot of fun. Swordfights and weird vampires.

The discovery of another victim confirms Grost's explanation. Along the way, Kronos and Grost take in a local Gypsy girl, Carla, who had been sentenced to the stocks for dancing on the Sabbath.

She repays them by helping them hunt the vampire; she later becomes Kronos' lover. Grost and Kronos conduct a mystical test that indicates the presence of vampires.

Their findings are contradicted by an eyewitness who claims to have seen "someone old, very old", whereas a youth-draining vampire should appear youthful.

He must leave before speaking with the bed-ridden Lady Durward. While riding through the woods, Marcus encounters a cloaked figure that leaves him shaken, and he finds blood on his lips.

At a tavern, Kronos defeats thugs led by Kerro, who were hired by Lady Durward's coachman to murder him. Kronos, Grost, Marcus and Carla set up a network of alarm bells in the woods to announce the passage of vampires.

Meanwhile, a large bat attacks and kills a young woman. Marcus realizes that he has become a vampire and begs Kronos to kill him. After various methods including impalement with a stake and hanging fail, Kronos accidentally pierces Marcus's chest with a cross of steel that Marcus had been wearing round his neck.

Having thus determined the vampire's weakness, Kronos and Grost obtain an iron cross from a cemetery. They are accosted by angry villagers, who believe that they murdered Marcus.

Grost forges the cross into a sword, while Kronos conducts a knightly vigil. After seeing the Durward carriage flee the scene of a vampire attack, Kronos suspects Sara as the vampire.

Carla seeks refuge at Durward Manor to distract the household while Kronos sneaks inside.
