The show is decent for a show. I'd rate it more like 4 stars but I give it 5 to make up for some of the idiots giving 2 star reviews because they don't know how season pass works and don't pay attention to what they buy.
Anyway, it's no Westworld, but it's a decent show that explores a theme I find interesting. In real life there have been studies on how humans treat technology, such as the study in which people were invited to play with a small dinosaur robot, give it a name, talk about what they feel it's personality is like, and then ask them to smash it with a hammer after, and they documented the results on who was willing to smash it, and who had become too connected to it, given it a personality and such in their mind, and didn't want to smash it.
It's an interesting study, there are podcasts and youtube videos about it if you're interested. This show explores that same kind of concept.
These robots called Synths that like in Bicentennial Man or iRobot were created to be human servants have developed feelings, and personalities, beyond what their programming should allow.
The show follows some of them as they awaken, and try to find a place for themselves, to no longer be slaves of the humans.
As I mentioned two movies with this premise, there are also shows with this same story such as Westworld though I believe Humans came out first, if that matters and the show about the robot cop not robocop, the newer one.
Point being, this isn't a new or original concept, but the show does a decent job at it. The Synth characters are complex and interesting characters, and it is interesting to see how the different humans react to them.
The show asks interesting psychological questions and does a good job of having them play out. Go read reviews for Season 1 if you want better reviews than what are here.
I liked the first two seasons, and I think three stars here is a like. However, I sensed the writers were struggling a bit.
I especially felt the efforts to be topical were a bit too transparent. Rejected and alone, Karen sets out to George's house to find Niska.

The premise of the show is that robotic technology has advanced to the level where androids are nearly indistinguishable from humans, yet the writers apparently never took five minutes to contemplate how that technology might have been integrated into the whole rest of society.
So we have a world where the robots are from the 22nd century, but literally NONE of the other technology has advanced a day beyond what we have today.
A humanoid robot can get behind the wheel and drive a regular car, but nobody ever thought to put a synthetic brain under the hood and eyes in the headlights?
The robots use cell phones. They ARE cell phones. Oh, they use laptops too. Figure that one out. In the latest episode Season 2 ep. Pick axes? You have 22nd-century robots and your best idea is to hand them a bronze-age tool and point them at the rock?
Like I said, I do like the show. The plot is interesting. So are most of the characters I actually find the robot characters more interesting than the human family members, who are kind of annoying.
So what could have been a 5-star show gets knocked down a notch. One of the best ever. I'm an engineer and I am the one who has always dreamed of building androids such as these.
I say that because it makes me a little biased in that I overlook some of the flaws of the series. I will correct one other person's review about flaws though: he questions why someone has been able to create the synths, but not much other tech has progressed to the same level.
That one's easy-it's because of one man's genius, plain and simple. That is plausible because this person spent his entire life developing the synth family.

How are those suspicious of synths who are ubiquitous, stronger, faster, smarter and know Kung fu wrong? Maybe a soul? The writers emotionally manipulate viewers with a baseball bat.
I thought the concept while not original lost something in the final season. What was interesting was the effect of the synths on ordinary families.
Instead we get lectured to on current events and mystical mumbo jumbo. This is a fantastic show based on a Swedish show I believe.
Like others I point out that many of the reviewers giving poor reviews do not understand how amazon season passes work for shows currently being broadcast.

Obviously if you buy a season after it has been broadcast you get all the episodes at once e. The themes this season deal with are racism and fear.
The synths are a reflection of humanity - good and bad. What I really like about the show is that it shows multiple and equal numbers of complex characters from both sides of the divide and particularly those who interact across it.

That could definitely happen. In other words, we have no idea what is being cooked up in some secretive lab somewhere all the time.
He also questions why the synths use cellphones and laptops. Its just easier to transfer and store data that way.
