I recently purchased a DVD copy of "The Final Countdown" because wanted to see if it would still seem "pretty good" to me 30 years after I first watched it.
Our story opens in the year The aircraft carrier "USS Nimitz," operating off the coast of Hawaii, is suddenly caught in a strange electrical vortex that transports the ship and its entire crew back in time to December 6, - the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Captain Yelland, the ship's commanding officer knows his history, and what that portends for the future.
He and his crew face a terrible dilemma: should they take steps to stop the impending Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, thereby altering history After viewing "The Final Countdown" for the first time in 30 years, I still think it's a "pretty good" movie.
It's well written and acted, has good solid production values, and is both thought-provoking and fun to watch. No modern-day science fiction film should be without world-class special and visual effects.
This is one area where "The Final Countdown" was a bit of a disappointment. The scenes showing the electrical vortex engulfing the "USS Nimitz" were definitely substandard, even by standards - reflecting perhaps the movie's budgetary constraints.
Certainly, three years after the release of the visually dazzling "Star Wars," the production team for "The Final Countdown" should have made a stronger effort to make their film more visually appealing.
Other special effects were somewhat better. Scenes of fighters taking off from the "Nimitz's" flight deck were excellent, and accurately showed what goes on during aircraft launch operations.
The dogfight scenes between the F fighters and Japanese Zeroes were also noteworthy. Three decades ago, I first watched "The Final Countdown" and thought it was a "pretty good" movie.
It's still a "pretty good" movie. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I found this film excellent to watch. Through a weather problem Kirk Douglas's ship goes back in time to I think it is.
Special effect's may be a little dated, but all in all it's well worth watching None of them can really work out what is really going on.
Until their pilots, actually see the Japanese war ship's going to Pearl Harbour. They also pick up a Senator who refuse's to believe what he is seeing.
Katherine Ross is also very good in this film. Well worth taking the time to watch this film. Kirk Douglas is great in this film.
Nice and polite but work's hard with his crew to find out what is really going on. I loved it PC. D J Jackson: Passionate about Film.
It provides a really superb newly restored HD version of this film. It is watchable in English and German, and is pretty easy to manage. This is a very superior product.
I can remember seeing this film on TV many moons ago, and again with my husband, also years ago. I can recall being intrigued and impressed. Had I mis-remembered?
The answer is a resounding NO! We watched it again on this yummy, inexpensive German disc, and frankly, it was every bit as good as we recalled. The crew acted as extras, some even with speaking parts; 48 are named on the final credits.
And very exciting it is. We see many scenes involving the life and work of the crew and of the Navy fliers.
Some here are critical of this, suggesting it is boring. If you have any regard for ships, the Navy, the sea, this is fascinating, and very impressive.
The cast is also impressive: the late great Kirk Douglas, and Martin Sheen, are, whilst not in their best-ever roles, just SO watchable.
Less well-known is James Farentino, and this probably IS his best role, as the very intense and professional senior flyer on board.
The plot is a good one, which begs a great many very philosophical, moral and scientific questions.
The debate between Sheen and Farentino over killing your own grandfather in the past, gets to the nub of the matter.
I would love to have seen more of this. Perhaps it is too complex a subject for any one film to cover?
Except by Christopher Nolan! My final verdict? Exciting, intriguing, scary, well-realised Sci-fi, just a fraction short of 5 Stars. One person found this helpful.
Good Performances By The Leads. Possibly changed by time. Another of my 'all time' favourites but not from the 50s era when some of the best sci-fi films were created.
Nevertheless the storyline is imaginative because it raises the possibility of time travel and the existence of 'time bubbles' floating through space.
Whether or not taking decisive actions whilst inside the bubble affects the time outside the bubble is the stuff of pure sci-fi.
This is a review of the Blu-Ray edition of the film, not the film itself. Compared to the DVD edition which I also own , this is a huge improvement.
The resolution is higher; this gets the extra details and not just blur. The only thing wrong with the picture is the occasional speck of dust from the film transfer.
I can't comment on the sound, since I only listen through headphones. The disc itself comes packaged in an unusual slimline case, with a catch that must be pulled outwards from the case before opening.
I like the case; in fact, I wish all my cases were like that to save on shelf space. If you're considering buying the Blu-Ray and are worried about the poor-quality transfers that plagued the DVD releases, don't be.
The quality is everything that can be expected from a Blu-Ray release of a film. Enjoy this cult sci-fi classic again in glorious HD!

Just re-watched and realised how its basically it's an american Navy propaganda film remember this came out in the s when tensions were high between America and Russia It's thinly veiled as a Sci FI at best.
I forgot how poor the story was and might as well just watched a documentary on 's navel warships. I found this film excellent to watch.
