We are told the movie is 'mostly' based on actual events but I think we have to take a lot of what we see with a pinch of salt. It's certainly an entertaining picture, if a little twee and whimsical at times, but there is also a little more heft to it than meets the eye.
As written by Lee Hall and directed by Stephen Frears this is no mere sentimental, historical romp.
It is, of course, the story of the Queen's friendship, in the years before her death, with her Indian servant Abdul Karim, Ali Fazal, an actor new to me , which until recently was something kept very much under wraps and which was very much opposed to by the Prime Minister, her son the Prince of Wales and the entire royal household and Hall makes this another post-Brexit movie, I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of post-Brexit movies in the next few years.
What we have here is a film about racism and about empire and it's quite as relevant today as it was back in Victoria's time.
Not that you have to take it too seriously; there's a lot of low comedy on display and Frears has assembled an outstanding cast of British character actors.
Eddie Izzard is an obnoxious future king, the late Tim Piggot-Smith is quite wonderful as the toadying head of the household, Michael Gambon is the befuddled Prime Minister and Paul Higgins practically walks off with the picture as the Queen's concerned doctor; concerned, not with her health, but with the number of Indians about the place.
As a piece of film-making there is, naturally, a large dose of Masterpiece Theatre on display but that, in itself, isn't such a bad thing.

You will be as disgusted with the self-centered, bigoted royals and their sycophantic staff as Victoria famously was.
I was taken aback by the twist in the story where the Queen's physician discovered that Abdul had an STD. This is not historically accurate there is no documentation of it in Abdul's personal diaries, which are the basis for most of what we know about him today.
I see no reason to tarnish his personal history with these insinuations-especially since the revelations are made by a doctor, they can be taken for historical fact.
For that I am taking off one star. Otherwise, the story is charming. I am disappointed that some of the other reviewers consider this a Christian-bashing film.
As a practicing Christian I am sometimes aghast at our intolerance for other religions. Putting Islam and Muslims in a positive light does not somehow in an of itself diminish Christianity.
What I saw was a loyal subject, who happened to be muslim, sharing aspects of his religious philosophy that Victoria was not aware of before, and which she found to be of great comfort.
Judi Dench as always was superb. She conveyed, to great effect, what must have been Victoria's sense of wonder at the intellectual and physical resources of this great land that she would never visit.
Perhaps some of us forget that at that time India was part of the British empire. Victoria took herself seriously as the Empress of India the merits empire building is a story for another day , and I for one am glad that she made the effort to learn one of the most important languages of her subjects.
This story has its audience, and perhaps that is not you. It is a period piece based on a character who was aged and whose life was at that time very limited in daily experience.
So yes, as some reviewers have observed, the story is slow. But this does not equate to boredom. If you are someone who does not like period pieces, you won't like this one either.
If you prefer fast moving action, or like to see lots of physical demonstrations of affection, if you want blood in your movies, please leave this one alone instead of watching it and then giving a negative review.
Queen Victoria had been devastated at the loss of her husband, Prince Albert, in She then developed a close relationship with her personal servant, John Brown, but he too passed away in For the next thirteen years, everyone around the Queen attempted to sabotage their friendship, but she steadfastly refused to hear anything against him.
In the book, author Shrabani Basu had framed a very readable book, despite a dizzying number of unfamiliar terms, locations and players. She also made a very convincing argument that, as Queen Victoria believed, the objections raised against Karim were entirely due to racism and class snobbery.
Karim are in fact due to these factors. Queen Victoria held the title of Empress of India and, as the reigning monarch of the Indian colony, was very much loved by the Indian people.
She insisted on having a large number of Indian servants in her household, much to the chagrin and disgust of her family and court. The various people in her life attempted to discredit the Munshie time and again, but were never able to substantiate any claims against him.
When Queen Victoria died, the Munshie and his family were expelled from England, along with all the other Indians in her court.
All personal correspondence from the Queen to her Munshie were seized and burned after her death and a paranoid persecution of Abdul and his family continued even beyond his death, eight years after his beloved queen.
Of course, the situation in India did not continue and British rule was abolished less than fifty years after the reign of Queen Victoria. For over one hundred years the story of the Munshie and his Queen languished in obscurity, until the book Victoria and Abdul and then the film of the same title untangled a very complicated and hidden chapter in English and Indian history.
Quite a good movie, human interest story is what it was to me. Wondered how much was true and how much was added to the film; would he have written about that in his century-later-found journals, about the wife not becoming pregnant because aspect?
I don't think so. Also highly doubtful the queen would have been dropped off on an island with her teacher with absolutely no bodyguard or staff.
However, his intelligence and manner was not in question and was certainly what must have won the Queen's heart and trust.

In the end, there's a photo of the queen herself with a much heavier Abdul. The actor who played him was very loveable and Judi Dench simply excellent in this film.
In today's milieu, this film is bound to stir up a few things; Muslim's called Hindu's due to ignorance just because they're from India would be offensive to anyone who is from either of those religions.
For me, the full black burkas were just unbearable to see even if it was a century ago and the nose ring. But as a human interest story from a piece of actual history, and as a film, it was exceptionally well done.

Brilliantly acted and photographed but all in all a bit of a disappointment. For some strange reason they have gone for laughs on what was in reality a sad and tragic tale of a lonely old Victoria taking to a Moslem servant to the consternation of the Royal household as you would expect at the time sadly.
Still Dench was perfection itself and should garner some award nods. For myself I would have preferred a more serious telling. There are 2 brief extras containing interviews that add little.
Both leads are as good as one-another. So much attention to detail. Faultless supporting cast, particularly enjoyed Eddie Izzard's role as the outraged Prince of Wales.
Victoria tried so hard towards the end of her life to protect her 'Munshi' knowing that, after her death, the Royal Household would send him packing back to India.
Historically not quite accurate, but artistic licence had to be applied. The lady was ahead of her time.
Brown, which both stars Dame Judy Dench as Victoria, which she portrays superbly!! This second film takes you to India and the friendship that blossoms between the then Queen of England and an Indian servant who is called Abdul who is the munshi.
This film follows the ups and downs of one of the longest serving monarchs, and the troubles that can occur in every family! This also shows the later life of Victoria and her sad passing, this film is both informative and quite sad too.
But well worth purchasing and adding to the first film, I enjoyed it immensely. Report abuse. Dame Judy Dench's performance makes this film worth watching, but the script is awful, and spoils what could otherwise have been an interesting account of the relationship between Queen Victoria and her Indian subject, The scene of a banquet at the Palace at which Abdul presents a coin to the Queen is just silly.
I can best summarise my review by saying that I will probably give the DVD away as this is not a film which I would wish to see again.
