I think if I hadn't known the storyline and the characters I would have been totally confused. The worst thing though was the quality of the soundtrack, I had to haves subtitles on as it was so muffled.
Blunt plays a jealous divorcee who spends her time travelling on the train in order to spy on her previous husband and his new family.
As she was unable to have children, she believes that they must be having the perfect life but due to a drink problem, she cannot quite recall things too clearly.
The film then goes into a series of flashbacks not the best idea as this has been done to death where Blunt's memories become clearer as she begins to overcome her alcohol problem.
Then she realizes that her ex husbands new marriage is not as perfect as it initially seemed as he's cheating on his new partner just as he did with her.
Not only that but many of her memories were distorted in her mind through drink and his lies. Overall watchable but the overly convoluted storyline lets it down.
Really liked this film. Quite a few layers to it in terms of plot twists. Writing and acting great - Emily Blunt especially.
Gripping and entertaining. Will watch again. However, when Megan suddenly goes missing, Rachel gets dragged into the investigation.
The dark and disturbing reveals that come to light are effective at times and the film does manage to ramp up intensity and discomfort effectively at times.
This all done at a slow pace with extended scenes of dreary scenery and bland set design which does in a way work with the bleak tone of the story.
