Charley's old best friend, Edward "Evil Ed" Lee, informs him that many students have gone missing, including their other childhood friend, Adam Johnson.
When Charley goes home after school, his mother, Jane, introduces him to Jerry Dandrige , their new neighbor. Fed-up and angry with Ed after he claims that Jerry is a vampire , Charley tells him that he is crazy and that he does not want to be friends anymore.
On his way home, Ed is confronted by Jerry, who claims that he has been watching Ed and has been aware of Ed watching him. Jerry soon chases Ed into a nearby pool and convinces him into believing that his life would be much better if he were a vampire.
Ed succumbs and willingly allows Jerry to bite him. The next day, Charley realizes that Ed is missing and decides to investigate, starting to believe Ed's claims when he discovers video recordings of objects moving on their own, with Ed's voiceover revealing that he is recording Jerry to prove that his reflection does not show up in recordings.
As Jerry begins to attack more people throughout the neighborhood, Charley sneaks into Jerry's house and finds out that he keeps his victims in secret rooms.
Charley goes to Las Vegas magician Peter Vincent, a supposed expert on vampires. Peter, however, does not take him seriously and kicks him out.
Jerry comes to Charley's house and sets fire to it. Charley, Jane, and his girlfriend, Amy Peterson, flee through the desert in their minivan.
Jerry catches up with them, but is wounded by Jane with a real estate sign stake. Jane is admitted to a hospital, where Charley is summoned by Peter.
Upon arriving at Peter's penthouse, he is informed of the species of vampire when Ed turns up. By now, Ed has been fully transformed into a vampire and he aids Jerry in attacking Charley, Amy, and Peter.
As they fight, Ed lets all of his anger out on his opponent and Charley reluctantly kills Ed. Meanwhile, Amy shoots Jerry with silver bullets, which are rather ineffective, but then injures Jerry with holy water.
They then run into a club, where they get separated in the crowd. Amy is kissed, bitten, and possessed by Jerry, who proceeds to take her. Peter refuses to help Charley and reveals that both of his parents were killed by a vampire later revealed to be Jerry himself.
He does, however, give Charley a stake blessed by Saint Michael that will kill Jerry and turn all of his victims back into humans.
Charley goes to Jerry's house, where Peter decides to join him after all. They are led into Jerry's basement, where they are attacked by many of Jerry's victims, including Amy.
Charley confronts Amy and she explains how they can be with each other forever. Just as she is about to bite Charley, he stabs her, intentionally missing her heart, and then escaping.
Meanwhile, Peter is ambushed by Jerry and many of his victims. Peter is able to kill a few before his weapon backfires. Charley returns to the basement, only to see Peter being fed on by the remaining vampires.
He decides to shoot holes in the roof, from which sunlight shines in and kills them. The patch of sunlight guards both Charley and Peter from the vampires who had not been destroyed.
Jerry appears, explaining that Charley's quest is, in fact, over.

With nowhere left to turn, Charley attempts to gain Peter's help once more. A frightened Peter initially refuses, but he then reluctantly resumes his "vampire killer" role as Charley approaches his neighbor's house.
The two are able to repel Jerry's attack using a crucifix, though only Charley's works since he has faith in its spiritual power.
Billy appears and knocks Charley unconscious over the banister, leaving Peter to flee to Charley's house. There, he is surprised by Ed, who attacks him in the form of a wolf, only to be pierced through the heart with a broken table leg held by Peter.
Removing the stake from Ed's corpse, Peter goes to rescue Charley and battle Jerry. Meanwhile, Charley is locked in with Amy, who is slowly transforming into a vampire.
Peter manages to free him before she awakens, and says the process can be reversed if they destroy Jerry before dawn.
Charley and Peter are then confronted by Billy, who is revealed to be an undead, though nonvampiric servant, and manage to destroy him, melting him into goo and sand.
Jerry appears, but Peter is able to lure the overconfident vampire in front of a window using a crucifix now working due to his renewed faith in its abilities.
Just before the morning sun, Jerry transforms into a bat and attacks Peter and Charley before fleeing to his coffin in the basement.
Charley and Peter pursue Jerry; the latter breaks open Jerry's coffin and tries to stake him through the heart while Charley fights off Amy, who has almost completed her transformation.
By breaking the blacked-out windows in the basement, Peter and Charley expose Jerry to the sunlight, destroying him.
Jerry's destruction leads to Amy reverting to her human form, and the three embrace. A few nights later, Peter returns to his Fright Night TV series and announces a hiatus from vampires by instead presenting a science-fiction film titled Mars Wants Flesh represented by clips from Octaman.
The series is being watched by Charley and Amy as they embrace in bed. As Charley gets up to turn off the TV, he at first sees red eyes in Jerry's now-vacant house, but dismisses them.
Unbeknownst to both Charley and Amy, the still undead Ed hiding in the darkness laughs and says, "Oh, you're so cool, Brewster! Nick Savage and Ernie Holmes portray the bouncers killed by Jerry.
Playboy Playmate Heidi Sorenson also appears as one of Jerry's victims. Charley Brewster was the engine, but Peter Vincent was the heart.
The Peter Vincent character was named after horror icons Peter Cushing and Vincent Price , and Holland specifically wrote the part for Price, [5] [8] but at this point in his career, Price had been so badly typecast that he had stopped accepting roles in horror movies.
Chris Sarandon's agent gave him a copy of the script and he replied, "there's no way I can do a horror movie," [9] but he decided to give the script a once-over and was immediately captivated by it.
Holland and he had an immediate rapport and went on to make several more films together , and Sarandon was awed that Holland had the film so completely mapped out that he "literally described the movie shot-by-shot all the way through — page-by-page, scene-by-scene.
It was basically the way he shot it. Jonathan Stark was not a fan of vampire films, but he also liked the script. The Billy Cole character was written as a hulking giant, so Stark padded himself with extra clothing when he went in to audition.
Why not throw him off the trail by being funny? Casting director Jackie Burch remembered his audition, though, and thought he would be right to portray Charley Brewster.
Ragsdale auditioned several times and ultimately received the news that he had landed the part on Halloween night , [12] [15] beating out several other future-stars like Charlie Sheen.
Due to a mix-up, Stephen Geoffreys had an awkward audition for Anthony Michael Hall 's role in Weird Science , [9] and he made an indelible impression on Jackie Burch, who suggested him for Fright Night.
Although he was not a horror-movie fan, Geoffreys loved the script, so he called his agent and emphatically declared that he would love to audition for Charley Brewster.
The most difficult role to cast was Amy Peterson. Once his cast was in place, Holland got input from each of the actors and made numerous revisions to the script.
Some were slight and others were major — such as the ending, which originally featured Peter Vincent transforming into a vampire as he returned to host Fright Night.
The cast and crew were given the luxury of having two weeks of rehearsal time in late November prior to filming.
Having begun his career as a classically trained actor, [19] Holland encouraged the cast to write biographies of their characters so they would completely understand their motivations and be able to draw on that information while filming their scenes.
As originally written, Jerry Dandrige was more villainous, so Sarandon tried to find various ways to humanize the vampire, [8] including suggesting the implication that the Amy character was the reincarnation of his long-lost love.
Stark and Sarandon had not picked up on Holland's intended gay subtext when they were developing their characters.
McDowall also did a lot of work on his character, and made a conscious decision to pattern his performance after the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.
He realizes it but doesn't admit it. He-had a moderate success in an isolated film here and there, but all very bad product. This poor sonofabitch just played the same character all the time, which was awful.
And then he disappeared from sight, 15 years beforehand. He's been peddling these movies to late night tv, various syndicated markets — he'd go six months In Iowa, six months In Podunk.
Recalled Ragsdale, "He had his videocamera on his shoulder and he shooting, like, family movies the whole time. Sarandon recalled that Holland collaborated with choreographer Dorain Grusman in shooting a disco dance scene to have Bearse's character physically changing so that "she goes from this rather dewey, innocent-looking girl to this femme fatale ; she kind of grows up right before your eyes" [23] The scene also established Amy discovering Jerry actually was a vampire.
Principal photography commenced on December 3, , and wrapped on February 23, It was totally my film without studio interference. Generally filming went off without a hitch, but a few mishaps did occur, including an incident in which Ragsdale broke his ankle while running down a staircase.
The schedule had to be reorganized, but filming continued. In fact, I think that the thing I'll remember most about this movie is everyone's spirit and humor.
Early in production, Holland invited Fangoria writer Abbie Bernstein to visit the set as often as she liked, and she took him up on his offer.
Of the wrap party in March, Bernstein wrote, "It's fun and pleasant, but it lacks the intense camaraderie of the set. Richard Edlund was the head of visual effects, and his team had just completed work on Ghostbusters , which worked to the advantage of Fright Night.
The most excruciating part of the makeup process for the cast was the contact lenses. In those days, the lenses were hard plastic, which Steve Johnson hand-painted throwing some glitter into the mix , lacquered, and sanded.
A set was made for Stark to wear when he was in his final pursuit of Peter and Charley, but he kept tripping on the stairs.
Holland told him to take one out, and he was then able to perform the scene. When it finally became too much to bear, she took the contacts out and the crew realized they had forgotten to buff them.
Brewster's bedroom, Geoffreys kept his contacts in for nearly 40 minutes, resulting in scratches on his eyeballs for months afterward.
For the transformation sequences, up to 8 hours were needed to prepare Sarandon's makeup. He did some of the stippling, and while the makeup men were applying prosthetics to his face and head, he worked on the finger extensions.
His will had been broken by that point! The makeup for Evil Ed's wolf transformation took 18 hours. On Christmas Eve, during the shooting of a scene where he is running down a staircase, Ragsdale accidentally tripped and broke his ankle, resulting in the film being temporarily put on a hold until he could recover.
For shots in which Charley's feet were visible, the costumers slit Ragsdale's shoes in several places, slipped them on and then covered the portions of white cast that peeked through the slits with black cloth.
The shot of Jerry pulling the pencil out of his hand was achieved by having a spring-loaded, collapsible pencil glued to his palm and an eraser-tip loosely attached to the back of his hand.
When he turns his hand and pulls the spring-loaded piece from his palm, out of shot a monofilament wire jerked away the tip, so when he turns it back, it appears as though he hss pulled it straight through his hand.
The crew attempted to achieve the illusion of the cross-scar vanishing from Evil Ed's forehead live on-set, but effect was a resounding failure.
In that predigital age, Edlund's crew was able to alter the film using optical photography to achieve the effect. Filming of the sequence with the bat was difficult for effects veteran Randall Cook, who kept winding up on film while puppeteering the creature.
William Ragsdale is good as Charlie Brewster, the teen main character in the movie. The boy that discovers that his neighbor is a real vampire but nobody believes him.
Good character. Special mention to Stephen Geoffreys as Evil Ed for being one of the weirdest but likable characters ever to appear in a horror movie.

Jonathan Stark as Billie Cole, Jerry's guardian, delivers a solid performance. This is one of the best casts that you can get from an 80's horror movie.
The 80's craziness was never this creepy. Tom Holland makes a terrific job this time. This man is behind key horror movies from the 80's like "Child's Play" and the surprisingly good "Psycho II" among others.
His camera work in "Fright Night" is great. He knew how to combine perfectly the 80's feeling something that nobody has ever described for it's madness with the Vampire movies basic rules.

You can't get better gore effects! The scene of Evil Ed's death when he's a werewolf is amazing. On it's time I'm sure that it shocked more than once.
Also, Billy Cole's death and the ending are great scenes that will please the horror audience's eyes. Enough said. The score is great.
The 80's pop metal and club music fits perfect with the feeling of the movie. The club scene is something you haven't seen.
In the tense and thrilling scenes the music works perfect. The cinematography is pretty good. The use of lightning on dark settings is very good.
Watch the DVD version for a different experience. I love the lines from the movie. I can assure that "Fright Night" is something you haven't seen.
